Age: 58

All my life I have lived in Acul, a small farming village near Nebaj. My wife gave me-hold on, let me ask her-yes: All in all 8 kids. The oldest is 31 and the youngest is 12.

During the war my family went into hiding for 3 and 1/2 years, and we barely survived in the mountains eating nothing but corn.

When we returned, the village was totally destroyed and we had to rebuild from scratch. It was a very sad and difficult time.

I hope that things will change for the better. Only two of my kids are still going to school. Considering the expense of school uniforms and materials, I can't send them past the age of 15. The school doesn't have enough classrooms for everyone, and even though education is so important, there is no help coming from the government.

At least I have work here and don't need to resort to crime in order to survive. I don't like talking about the past. It's good to be cautious - and what's the point anyway? Talking to you won't change things for the better.

Thank God for this: At least my family survived.
